An intent is the purpose or goal of a user's input. Examples are utterances that fit a particular intent. For example, in the cognitive car scenario, we have an intent called #locate_amenity. If I ask the car "Where is the nearest food?" it recognizes this intent and select the corresponding dialog branch. Choosing the correct intent for a user's input is the first step in providing a useful response. The best way to prepare your application to identify the intent of each input is to gather as many actual user questions, commands, or other utterances as possible. Using input from real users gives a better picture of the input that your application might receive than having experts create lists of utterances. After you have a list of examples, sort them into categories. These categories, or intents, depend on the purpose of your bot. Assign each example to an intent. These examples help your bot to identify the correct intent for new input. Now you are ready to begin configuring your bot.
